Munich Air Crash - 6 Feb 1958

As a life long Red, today is the day each year where we remember the Busby Babes, a team which was decimated at 3.04pm on 6 Feb 1958. The Manchester United players were participating in the new European Cup competition and were trailblazing for English football. Their participation in the competition had been frowned upon and this meant they had to get back to Manchester as soon as possible so that they could compete in their Saturday league fixture. It was a very bad night in Munich, there was a lot of snow on the ground and the plane carrying the players barely made it off the group when it crashed into a nearby house.

Of the 44 people on board, 23 died.

The Manchester United players who died in the tragedy were:

Geoff Bent
Roger Byrne
Eddie Colman
Duncan Edwards (survived the crash but died in hospital 15 days later)
Mark Jones
David Pegg
Tommy Taylor
Liam 'Billy' Whelan

The young lads were all local heroes and the tragedy devastated English football, with some of those seen as great prospects for the future of the national side.

This year sees the 50th anniversary of the disaster.

The players as they prepare to board the plane to Munich from Ringway Airport (now known as Manchester Airport).
